Kupang

March 25, 2005

We had to drive to Kupang to catch a flight to Bali so we could get to Phuket.  It took us 11 hours to drive there because of the winding mountain road and heavy rain.  Though the road was a lot better most in Timor, our nanny was sick the whole time.  Alec get sick twice :-(  But he only cried when he realized that he had a messy shirt!  As soon as we changed his shirt, he was all happy again.  We get into the hotel in Kupang around midnight and left the town for Bali bright and early the next morning.

We parked our car at the airport's parking lot and did not  realized that would create such a scandal -- particularly as we had checked in with the police and with the parking attendant.  It seems that our diplomatic plate from East Timor piqued the interest of a lot of different people. So much so a bomb squad team came and check whether our car carrying a bomb.  We, of course, were blissfully ignorant of all of this until Sean got back to Kupang where he spent hours with the officials there.  The incident made

it to the papers in Kupang (the crime section, no less). Can you believe that?

Picture on the right translation: Looking for bomb.  NTT Bomb squad team is checking a car from Timor Leste with a plate#027-8 CD thought to be carrying a bomb at El-Tari Kupang airport.

Kupang city itself is actually more developed than Dili and lots cheaper!  We didn't take many  pictures in this city and we wish we stayed longer, but didn't have the time.  Maybe next time, Kupang!
