back to Sumatra

U.S. Naval Hospital Ship Mercy

July 2006

Though this is the second time for Sean to visit USNS Mercy (the first one was in Dili), this is the first time I actually get around to post this page on our website.  Following the success of their last visit in 2004 on helping 107.000 patients of the Tsunami victims, USNS Mercy is back to Indonesia.  USNS Mercy is an incredible floating hospital by the U.S. Naval.  They are offered general medical treatment free of charge in Sumatra and some neighboring islands.  Their service including: hair lips treatment, radiology and laboratory, dermatology, urology, ob/gyn, surgery and/or plastic surgery, cataract, distribution of glasses, contact lenses, etc. This visit include giving a basic knowledge about health and dental treatment, immunization and vet to the locals.

Team Mercy also coordinate with the local hospitals, medical schools and given many lessons and training for sanitation and medical equipment management.  All the volunteers are include Aloha Medical Mission, Project Hope, International Relief Teams and San Diego Pre-Dental Society from University of California.  India's and Canada's military health specialists are also involved in this mission.

A motorcycles accident' victim (woman laying on the first row) was presumed zero percent of surviving by the local doctor.  After 12 hours surgery at the Mercy, she will live for a very long time...
