USS Essex
A United States Amphibious Readiness Group (ARG)
visited Dili around Halloween. It was the first time an aircraft carrier
had ever visited the island. The lead ship, the USS Essex is a carrier
specially for jump jets and helicopters. It is bigger than any of the
carriers used during World War II or the Korean War.
We had to go to the ship twice. The first time
Sean had to travel with a group of VIPs, including President Gusmao. He
went by helicopter both ways--out on a banana and back on a black (sea) hawk.
The next day the entire family went, including Alec and Sumi. We traveled
by landing craft. Cici, as expected, nearly got us all in trouble by
climbing on the tanks and APCs. It made for great pictures, though...After
she did it, all kinds of other people started doing it too, until the marines
made them stop. (We were the only people fast enough to get pictures,
though!)
